Essential Oils And the Doula

Essential oil usage is now ubiquitous in the modern home, but these natural products require additional education and awareness when used during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Just as doulas are equipped to assist parents in achieving informed consent for medical procedures, doulas should be able to confidently and accurately communicate with clients about the known risks and benefits of essential oil exposures during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Doulas and aspiring doulas will learn how to navigate this topic while staying within the DONA International scope of practice and will receive practical tools for referring to a professional aromatherapist when needed.
