Four Ways to Support Clients Through the Identity Shift Into Parenthood

As emotional supports, doulas have a unique opportunity to assist clients in not only the physical and mental aspects of birth but also in the shift in identity as they become parents (whether for the first or tenth time). In this session, we will discuss the identity shift into parenthood – particularly motherhood – and examine four ways in which doulas can best support clients through this transition. These recommendations are based on the presenter’s original sociological research with the most comprehensive dataset in existence on the topic: a four-year study of 84 people with various fertility ideals and realities.
