Who’s Caring For You – Self Compassion in a Chaotic World

In a time when doulas are needed more than ever doulas continue to leave the profession due to burnout. Doulas are often naturally empathic however evidence suggests that empathy is associated with greater emotional distress and burnout (empathy fatigue). In contrast, compassion is associated with more positive emotions due to the activation of distinct brain regions that reduce stress. The concept of self-compassion is lacking for many doulas who sacrifice their wellbeing as a direct result of their dedication to clients. Just like the many skills we learn as doulas compassion cultivation is a skill that can improve our own wellbeing and the care provided to the families we work with. Self-compassion is the missing link in the self-care ‘movement’
