Certified as a doula since 2004, she has dedicated her career to supporting low-income and BIPOC families, advocating for equitable, compassionate, and culturally sensitive care. As a high-risk labor and delivery nurse, Nikki integrates clinical expertise with hands-on doula support, ensuring comprehensive maternal care. Beyond direct patient care, she is a skilled educator and mentor, empowering both doulas and nurses to meet the unique needs of underserved communities. The Role of Newborn Respite in Improving Maternal Mental Health During the Postpartum Period

The postpartum period is a time of profound transformation but also immense vulnerability for new mothers. Sleep deprivation, hormonal changes, and the emotional adjustment to parenthood can significantly impact maternal mental health, leading to challenges such as postpartum depression, anxiety, and feelings of isolation. Despite increased awareness of these issues, many families lack the support systems needed to ease these transitions effectively.

Newborn respite—short-term, professional care provided for newborns—offers a valuable solution. By giving mothers the opportunity to rest, recover, and prioritize self-care, respite care can be a critical component of postpartum well-being. This session will explore how integrating newborn respite into postpartum care plans supports maternal mental health, reduces stress, and fosters a healthier parent-child bond.

Doulas are uniquely positioned to advocate for and provide newborn respite services as part of a holistic care approach. This presentation will highlight practical ways doulas can educate families on the benefits of respite care, collaborate with healthcare providers, and implement this service in a variety of community and home-based settings.
